We Did the Hell Out of the Laramie Project

Well, we did the hell out of the Laramie Project. We had great discussions after performances with Cal Reruka, the prosecuting attorney in the trials, as well as Thomas Howard from the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

So what are we aiming for: erasing hate from the human psyche, teaching tolerance, appreciating differences, or something inbetween?

Thoughts about the discussion topics, the performances, the cast party? Anything at all?

Working on The Laramie Project, as a member of the interface group and sitting up in the booth watching rehearsals and performances night after night has been one of the most profound experiences of my life. It did not change my feelings about the incident, but intensified and codified them. It also inspired me to write a poem, which Dave asked me to post on the site.

CHOICES
(dedicated to the memory of Matthew Shepard)

Choices fill our days from dawn to dusk
Rarely affecting only us
Like stones tossed into a still pond
The ripples expand outward relentlessly
Touching family, friends, neighbors
Impacting people we don’t even know
Their choices touched us all
Part of each of us died that night
Tied to a lonely fence
Our lives are like a spider’s web
Tug one thread loose and it all unravels
We were stripped of our innocence
Robbed of the belief that such things
only happen somewhere else
Some deeds cannot be undone
We can never forget
We should never forget
But we can learn from those deeds
If we learn compassion, consideration
If we learn to think before we act
Maybe we won’t need to ask ourselves
How many people have I hurt today?

I agree. We did. Well done everyone. It was a life alter/altaring experience and I feel so close to everyone there, aw now I've gone and made myself sad. It was an honor to work with all these fine people, and Praise G!
